VCC meeting. Jan. 12, 2010
Minutes
Vassalboro Conservation Commission
7:00 pm, Present: Paul Mitnik, Mary Ellen Johnston, David Jenney, Steve Jones, Holly Weidner, and guest, Nate Gray, IF&W.
1.Boat launch site - Paul discussed the next step, which is to contact the town attorney and both landowners. Dave will call Josh Platt about the design for the site.
2. Paul brought up the Shoreland zoning work that the Planning Board is doing. They are updating the ordinance, and planning to have some resource protection mapping done. We agreed to discuss this further at the Feb. meeting.
3. Our guest speaker, Nate Gray, with the IF&W came to give an overview of the Alewives Restoration Project in the China Lake Outlet Stream area. They have applied for a NOAA grant to assess the passage of alewives and improve passages at the 6 dams on the Outlet Stream. We had a very interesting slide show and discussion about the importance of alewives to the health of China Lake. The Webber Pond alewives restoration project shows what can be done and how the lake improves when native species are allowed to spend the summer and leave in the fall to spawn up-stream. We will work with Nate to continue to provide information and education to the town.
4. The next meeting will be on Feb. 9th.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Ellen Johnston, Chair
