Town Cemetery Committee
April 9, 2018

Present: Russell Smith, Sue Haines, David Jenney, Jody Kundreskas, and Rick Lees

Met at 3:30 at the town office.

Sue was the “chair” in the absence of Jane. We also had no minutes of the March meeting. At the last meeting they started going over the rules which currently are only for the North Vassalboro Cemetery.

We started with section 2 of those rules, lot ownership. We decided that a given person would be limited to buying a maximum of 4 lots, unless there was permission from the town manager, lacking a sexton. We worked on the premise that 1 lot would hold one casket burial and a number of cremains. We further decided that any unused lots could be sold back only to the town. Unused lots could be passed on to heirs.

The town must be notified of any burial within a certain period of time.

Section 3 of the North rules we liked. Section 4 we didn't discuss in detail, but generally agreed with.

Section 5 caused a good deal of discussion. 5A is unchanged. 5B would now read: No glass item shall be placed on lots. We ask that family members remove temporary graveside decorations and displays. Etc. Then we skipped down to the last sentence that starts “the town”. This we propose reading: The town reserves the right to remove and dispose of any remaining graveside decorations that are deemed hazardous, unsightly, detrimental or diseased or when they do not conform to the standards maintained by the rest of the cemetery.

The worksheet then goes on to section 6b about owner paying and I believe we didn't get to that?

The other item of business was the request by Jody that we post in the newspapers that work would be done on graves in cemeteries older than 1900 unless the owner notified the town office to the contrary. I told Mary who wasn't sure she had the wording. I will ask Jane if she had wording. But it needs to be done before the June work in the Cross Hill Cemetery.

Our next meeting will be May 7 at 3:30/
