New Business: Lauchlin Titus attended the selectmen’s meeting and indicated that he, Lori Fowle and Libby Mitchell represent the town of Vassalboro on a regional committee and various sub-committees in regards to consolidating the school union as directed by the state. Currently SAD 47 (Oakland, Belgrade, Sidney and Rome), Waterville and School Union 52 (Vassalboro, Winslow and China) and discussing the possibility of consolidating. Both Lauchlin and Libby indicated there are many hurdles in this process. School choice has been an issue for Vassalboro and China and some of the discussions “may” limit the choice to the current high schools in the district and Erskine Academy. Another issue discussed briefly was the buses and school buildings would become the property of the district and not the towns. Both Libby and Lauchlin indicated the consolidation would have some benefits such as; each high school could develop a specialty that would benefit students; the new regional unit could also offer adult education courses at Vassalboro Community School, saving the resident the drive to Waterville or SAD 47. Libby asked the town manager to contact the school or school union to have either a power point presentation or a handout for the December 19, 2007 meeting with the selectmen.
There being no further business, a motion to adjourn the selectmen’s meeting at 8:34p.m. Libby/Rob, 2-0.
